About This Site

Hunting Gear Spot is written by a lifelong whitetail and turkey hunter who tests gear on a family lease and public land in the Deep South. We publish honest reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on treestand safety harnesses, cellular trail cameras, scent control sprays, hand warmers and laser rangefinders, and we tell you what did not work as plainly as what did.

Hunting Safety

Falls from treestands are among the most common causes of serious hunting injuries. Wear a full-body fall-arrest harness every time your feet leave the ground, stay connected from the moment you start climbing until you are back on the ground, inspect straps, tethers and stand hardware before every season, and replace any harness that has arrested a fall or is past its manufacturer's service life. Always use a haul line for gear and never climb with anything in your hands.

Wear blaze orange where your state requires it, positively identify your target and know what lies beyond it, and tell someone where you are hunting and when you will be back. Cold, wet weather can bring on hypothermia faster than you expect, so dress in layers and do not stay out past what your body can handle. Follow all federal, state and local hunting regulations, including those covering trail cameras, scent products and hunting hours, which vary by state. Use laser rangefinders as directed and never look at the sun through any optic.
